Numbeo — Cost of Living (Rent Per Month) — checked 2026-09-07

Numbeo's crowd-submitted "Rent Per Month" figures for this city (1-bedroom and 3-bedroom apartments, city centre and outside centre). 727 entries in the past 12 months from 55 contributors. Comfortable band = 1BR city centre (฿15,982) to 3BR outside centre (฿17,292). This band is narrow (~8%) because those two independently-collected Numbeo figures happen to sit close together this period — a real feature of the current data, not a rounding error.

Comfortable: 1-bedroom apartment (city centre) up to a larger unit outside centre, City centre to outside centre, Long-term (12-month) lease, furnished.

Numbeo — Cost of Living (Rent Per Month) — checked 2026-08-24

Numbeo's crowd-submitted "Rent Per Month" figures for this city (1-bedroom and 3-bedroom apartments, city centre and outside centre). 1,239 entries in the past 12 months from 194 contributors. Comfortable band = 1BR city centre (฿22,947) to 3BR outside centre (฿24,785). This band is narrow (~8%) because those two independently-collected Numbeo figures happen to sit close together this period. Cross-checked against a second, listing-based source (Superagent.co, Sept 2026), which reports a realistic Bangkok 1BR range of ฿16,000–40,000/month with a ฿25,000 average — consistent with, and wider than, this band, as expected since that source spans multiple neighborhoods and unit qualities rather than one city-wide crowd-sourced average.

Common questions

What people ask before they move

The questions we hear most from people planning a Thai retirement, answered plainly.

How much money do I need for a retirement visa?

The most common route, the Retirement Visa (O-A), asks for either 800,000 THB (roughly $23,000 USD) held in a Thai bank account, or a monthly income of at least 65,000 THB (roughly $1,850 USD) — some routes accept a mix of both. The exact figure depends on which visa fits you and moves with exchange rates, which is why our Visa Checker walks through your own numbers instead of giving you one answer that may not apply.

Do I need health insurance?

For most retirement visas, yes — Thailand requires proof of health insurance with a minimum coverage amount, and immigration checks it at renewal. Even where it isn't strictly required, we'd still recommend it: private healthcare here is excellent but not free, and a solid policy is what keeps an unexpected hospital visit from becoming a financial problem.

What does it actually cost to live here per month?

It depends entirely on your city and lifestyle — a comfortable single retiree in Chiang Mai might spend around $1,000–1,300 USD a month, while Bangkok or Phuket run higher. Rather than quote you an average that may not fit your situation, run our Cost Calculator with your own city, lifestyle, and household size for a number you can actually plan around.

Can I get by without speaking Thai?

Yes, especially in the cities most retirees choose — Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Phuket, Hua Hin, and Pattaya all have large expat communities, English-speaking clinics, and English-friendly landlords and agents. That said, picking up basic Thai goes a long way for everyday life and goodwill with neighbors — most long-stayers get there within the first year without really trying.

Is it safe to retire in Thailand?

Generally, yes — it's one of the world's most popular retirement destinations for a reason, and violent crime against foreigners is rare. As anywhere, petty theft and scams targeting tourists exist, so the usual precautions apply: use licensed agents, reputable landlords, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Sticking to established expat areas makes this easier, especially in your first year.
